Restorations & Fillings
Dental fillings and repairs using restorative materials used to repair teeth which have been compromised due to cavities or trauma.
Sealants
Dental sealants, usually applied to the chewing surface of teeth, act as a barrier against decay-causing bacteria. Most often, the sealants are applied to the back teeth, e.g., premolars and molars.
Root Canal Therapy
Root canal treatments on diseased or abscessed teeth. Once a tooth is injured, cracked or decayed, it is necessary to open the tooth and clean out the infected tissue in the center. This space is then filled and the opening sealed.
Crowns & Bridges
Crowns are dental restorations that protect damaged, cracked or broken teeth. Dental crowns often referred to as caps, sit over the entire part of the tooth that lies above the gum line. Crowns are also placed on top of dental implants. Bridges are a method to replace a missing tooth or teeth. Bridges are false teeth anchored in place by neighboring teeth. A bridge consists of two crowns on the anchoring teeth along with the false tooth in the center.
Extractions
A severely damaged tooth may need to be extracted. Permanent teeth may also need to be removed for orthodontic treatment.
Extractions
Implants are complete replacement of missing teeth. A titanium screw is placed in the bone and a crown is placed on top of the implant to provide a new tooth.
Dentures
Dentures are prosthetic devices replacing lost teeth. There are two types of dentures – partial and full. Full dentures are often referred to as “false teeth”.
Oral Cancer Examination
Oral cancer starts in the cells of the mouth, tongue or throat. Oral cancer screening is usually a routine part of a dental examination. In this exam, your dentist will feel for lumps or irregular tissue changes in your neck, head, face, and inside your mouth. Your dentist will also look for sores or discolored tissue in your mouth.
Teeth Whitening
Teeth naturally darken with age, however staining may be caused by various foods and beverages such as coffee, tea and berries, some drugs such as tetracycline, smoking, or a trauma to a tooth. We offer various in-office and take-home whitening options. We’ll have you smiling bright at the Heart & Crown in no time.
Veneers
Veneers are strong, thin pieces of ceramic or resin materials that are bonded to the teeth. Veneers are used to repair chipped, decayed or stained teeth and may help in closing gaps between teeth.
Gum Hygiene Treatments
Periodontal or gum disease is an infection that affects the gums and jaw bone, which can lead to a loss of gum and teeth. There are two major stages — gingivitis and periodontitis. Gingivitis is the milder and reversible form; periodontal disease is often more severe. In some cases, gum surgery will be required to reverse the effect of the disease.
IV Sedation
The most powerful method of sedation available in general dentistry. A method of conscious sedation where you will feel relaxed and sleepy throughout the appointment and then have no recollection of it afterwards.
Conscious Sedation
With conscious sedation, you will remain awake throughout your procedure but will be in a deep state of relaxation. It is recommended that patients receiving conscious sedation have a parent, spouse, or friend accompany them to appointments because it can take several hours for the sedative to wear off and driving may be unsafe.
Migraine
Some conservative treatments that we offer include oral splints or night guards, trigger point injections, and botox.
Sleep Apnea & Snoring Appliances
Snoring may be a sign of a breathing problem called obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). Both can be treated with a simple custom-made oral appliance that is worn at night.

Frequently Asked Questions
How often should I go to the dentist?
Some patients only go to the dentist if they have a problem, but the focus should be on preventative dentistry. Even if you take care of your teeth by brushing and flossing daily, it’s easy to miss areas between teeth and under the gumline. Plaque can harden into a material called tartar, which is nearly impossible to remove on your own. Tartar can buildup and lead to cavities, so it’s crucial to come in for regular cleanings
What questions should I ask a new dentist?
Some important questions to ask your new or prospective dentist are:
–How long have you been in practice?
-What kind of dental technology do you use?
-How do you treat patients with dental anxiety?
-Do you stay up to date with the most recent dental techniques?
-What kind of emergency care do you provide?
-Does your office offer any payment plans?
-What insurance plans does your office accept?
-What kind of services do you offer?
It’s important that you find a dentist who can meet your needs and address your concerns. You’ll also want to find a dentist that’s close to your preferred location. If you have any questions, feel free to contact our office by calling (613) 406-6464. We’re happy to explain the services we offer.
What is fluoride and why is it important to dental health?
Since fluoride helps to protect against cavities, we recommend using dental products that contain fluoride as part of your oral care routine. We also offer professional fluoride treatments that are highly concentrated and only take a few minutes to apply.
Why are x-rays important at the dentist?
-Abscesses or cysts
-Developmental abnormalities
-Some types of tumors
-Decay that exists between teeth or below restorations
-Infections in the bone or gums
When we examine your oral health on a regular basis, we’re able to detect any issues before they become complicated and require more intensive treatments. Scheduling regular checkups and professional cleanings at our downtown Ottawa office will help ensure your mouth is free of disease and in the best of health.
What should I do if I chip, break, or knock out a tooth?
-Rinse your tooth to remove dirt debris
-Place the tooth in a container to protect it from further damage
-Avoid attempting to place the tooth back in the socket
-Soak the tooth in saline solution to prevent the roots from drying out
-Keep the pieces of your broken or chipped tooth in a safe place
It’s vital to schedule an appointment as soon as you get a chance– this will help ensure the re-implantation is successful. Trying to fix a tooth that has been displaced on your own may only cause more damage.
